Why is Functional Design So Important?
Navigation
Nothing will make a web client leave a site faster than poor navigation. If they cannot find what they want within 30 seconds – 90 seconds of landing on a page, they’re gone. So the importance of clear, well thought out navigation elements cannot be overstated. The Hierarchy of a site should also be parallel to the hierarchy of the products or services of the business it represents. For example, if you run a high end linen store what do sell more of? Towels? Sheets? Bedding? The most popular should come first.
Landing pages can also be used to direct clients directly to the area they are interested in. There is no rule that states every visitor to a site must land on the home page. If a visitor is searching for luxury sheets, have a landing page to take them directly to the sheets page.
Design and Layout
I will not detract from traditional website design firms when it comes to the actual visual design of the site, except to say, you get what you pay for. Make sure any design layout is appropriate before the page launches as most contracts will stipulate that only minor changes will be made after launch at no cost.
Sitemaps
Sitemaps are largely overlooked. But they are important for two good reasons. One, they are used to submit a blueprint of a site to search engines so that all of the pages will be cataloged. Two, they are the last ditch effort of frustrated visitors trying to find something they want on your site. For both of these reasons make sure a site map is not just available, but also well organized and with working links.
