Many websites have pages built by design companies with pretty pictures and graphical elements, titles stating the service or product that a certain web page is dedicated to, and either very poorly written, un-researched copy or absolutely none at all. Meta Tags
Meta Tags are lists of keywords which are found in the "Head" of the HTML code of a web page. Search Engines could be considered more or less blind. The spiders they employ are as if they are reading brail. The spiders understand text. They cannot see images, or pictures, or movies, or Flash generated content (though I concede the last item is being hotly debated currently as Google and Yahoo both claim there spiders can crawl flash, but many web programmers and search engine junkies have not seen any positive evidence of those claims). Because most design firms are interested only in creating visually stunning layouts, they mostly focus on all of the above mentioned elements. So enter the alt tags.
