May 21, 2010 -- "How can SEO help service businesses survive when Season Ends?"
As a second edition of this new CyberSemaphore blog I would like to bring up something that happens to the local businesses here in South Florida. The business owners or SEO gurus in the area should notice that when they perform keyword search analysis for local keywords they will most likely find a graph with a severe decline in the end of April or beginning of May.
Since most businesses down here have a seasonal relationship with profit, it should not shock business owners that local keyword searches (ie “my business” south fl, or “my business” Palm Beach County) disappear just as quickly as the snow birds when May arrives. Why?
Two reasons:
First, the population of our fair cities drop and therefore not as many people are searching for goods and services in the area.
Second, (and more importantly) the year round residents already know what they like! Full time South Floridians are A.W.O.L during the January through May season because they don’t like the crowds. When Season finally passes it is these same people who keep businesses alive.
So the question becomes, “how can I market my business to attract more locals that will keep me alive until next January?”
Well, I can’t speak to all of your marketing strategies, but I can tell you what will count with SEO.
1) Make your searches reflect local attitudes.
Year round residents appreciate the deals they will be able to find come summer when the snowbirds leave. Every business should have a list of keywords that they can utilize in summer that will reflect their off season rates, discounts, and deals. Examples may be “cheapest 18 holes FL”, or “best early bird menu”, “romantic weekend breakers $200!”. The key is to remember that SEO is the same as any other marketing. If you are in an area that changes prices and clientele on a seasonal basis, then change your keywords appropriately with each change during the year.
2) Invigorate your website with promotional items and off-season discounts designed to let the year round residents know you appreciate their business.
3) Create website campaigns that will draw the attention of year round residents and keep them coming back to look at your site, even if they are not coming into your business regularly.
If your business holds events or celebrations, take good pictures and post them on your site. Send a link to your email list so your clients/customers can enjoy seeing themselves and others online.
4) Redouble your email marketing campaigns and dig deep into the sea of social networking to get people talking.
Start a facebook page, if you don’t have one already, for your business. Use it to search out some of your friends and regular clients that you know are year round residents. Then give them some type of promotional deal for joining your page and sending your information on to their contact list. Twitter accounts can similarly be used, as well as other social networking sites.
These are just a few ideas of how to help local businesses survive the lull of off season traffic. And for those outside of South Florida, the same things can help other seasonal areas like the East Coast and businesses in college towns that see huge booms during the semesters and lulls when the students leave for summer.
May 14, 2010 -- "New Site Launched!"
Thanks for visiting the new CyberSemaphore website. This is the first entry of what will be a weekly blog. This week I will just reiterate a few of the goals that my company hopes to achieve in the future.
First, we plan to do our utmost to help each of our clients to achieve greater success in a tough economy. While the stock market has been rising, and employment seems to be picking up slightly throughout the country, it is not time to let good solid marketing initiatives fall to the wayside. Every small, medium, and large business should be actively pursuing campaigns to increase their market share. If you would like to know more about how we can help call us 561-635-3060 or email me personally at jrpotter777@yahoo.com.
Second, our link building initiative will help businesses local to West Palm Beach and South Florida benefit from each other’s success. Solid referrals from websites in good standing make a huge impact on Google natural ranking. By linking many local businesses together it will increase all their websites’ chance at a top ten rank. The best part of this initiative is that it will work across markets. By linking local companies who do not necessarily compete with each other, say a hair salon and a mechanic shop, both companies can add to their search engine ranking points and compete better on the world wide web against other businesses with whom they do compete. Contact us if you’d like to learn more.
Third, the weekly blog is intended to discuss the newest trends in website marketing and SEO. Quite often a new trend or trick will be found and employed only later to be recognized by Google, Yahoo, or Bing as a type of spamming. It is important to be aware and think carefully before employing any trick which guarantees quick results. If your site is marked for doing something not in good standing with the big search engine operators it can take a long time to recover your good name.
Remember, a good organic search marketing campaign is a long and steady process of research, trial and error. There is no quick fix to becoming number one. If you would like to discuss long term strategies for ultimate success contact us.
